Chapter 7 - A Victim of Domestic Violence?
In March 14, psychologist Richard Samuels took the stand and stated that Arias had acute stress at the time of the killing. She went into flight or fight mode and her brain stopped retaining memory. He also diagnosed her as suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
The prosecutor accused the psychologist of having formed a relationship with the accused and said that his opinions were biased. On March 26, Alyce La Violette, a psychotherapist, also testified that Arias had been a victim of domestic violence.
The prosecutor brought Janeen DeMarte, a clinical psychologist, to the stand, who reported that Arias did not suffer from PTSD or amnesia. She said she found no evidence of any abuse. DeMarte diagnosed Arias as a borderline personality disorder case and said that people with this disorder are terrified of being abandoned by others.
Psychologist Dr. Robert Geffner, a defense witness, testified that DeMarteâs diagnosis was inappropriate and all her tests demonstrated that she was suffering from anxiety disorder due to trauma. He also said that Arias answered questions honestly. He also said that the MMPI test was not meant for diagnosing borderline personality disorder.
The prosecution called Dr. Jill Hayes, a forensic neuropsychologist, who disagreed with Geffnerâs claim that the MMPI was not meant to diagnose borderline personality disorder.
